Majagaleehl Gali Aks Elementary School Temporary School Closure – Extended March 8-12, 2021

CMSD82 News Release – MGA Temporary School Closure Extended – March 8-12, 2021  (PDF Format)

On March 1, 2021, Coast Mountains School District 82 received formal notification from the Northern Health Authority regarding a second confirmed COVID-19 exposure at its Majagaleehl Gali Aks Elementary School, which is located on Provincial lands requiring access through the Gitanmaax Reserve located on Federal lands.

The Gitanmaax Band Council has passed a further resolution on March 2, 2021 indicating access to the Majagaleehl Gali Aks Elementary School is denied until March 12 inclusive.  The notification was received by the school district this morning, March 4.

This temporary school closure is not a COVID-19 closure.  That directive can only be authorized by the Northern Health Authority and the Ministry of Education.  This closure is based on the precautionary safety measures undertaken by the Gitanmaax Band Council for their community.

During this extended temporary school closure, the school principal and staff will continue to work out of the remote hub located in the Game Changer Program building, separate to Hazelton Secondary School.  Access to the remote hub will be permitted to Majagaleehl Gali Aks Elementary School staff only while ensuring social distancing protocols are followed.  The school principal will continue to determine the specific duties and work location of staff on a case-by-case basis.

Parents/guardians will be contacted today regarding the extended temporary school closure.  School staff will be engaged with families and students in an effort to continue online educational engagement.

We are extremely grateful for the resilience and perseverance demonstrated by the staff, students and families of Majagaleehl Gali Aks Elementary School during these unprecedented times.
